Origin Summary

After yet another disappointing defeat at the hands of the QLDers last night I would like to give my report on the NSW 1-17.

1. Gidley-Not enough involvement from the back, was very dangerous when moved into hooker and looks made for that spot in game 3.
2. Williams-HOLD THE BALL, DON'T PASS, DON'T KICK. If he could do these he might have had a good game, unfortunately he made more errors than Hodges did on debut and must be dropped for the last game.
3. Lyon-Solid but very uninspiring in attack.
4. Monaghan-Very ordinary, didn't offer anything and should be moved to the wing or dropped.
5. Hayne-DY-NA-MITE game from Hayne on the wing and fullback. NSW's best by far, should play fullback for game 3.
6. Barrett-Did a few good things but didn't seem to guide the team around well enough for someone with his experience. Good cheap shot on Inglis was his best work
7. Wallace-GOOOOOOOOOONE. Another terrible game must end his rep career for now. Kicking and passing game were sub standard and I think he shouldn't have been brought back out after half time.
8. Kite-Was benched early on for lack of involvement and intensity. Was walking after 7 minutes and was the man who didn't make the effort and let Inglis score the 1st try. Would be on thin ice if NSW had more front rowers.
9. Farah-Couldn't get much going with the amount of errors NSW made. His passing game is very average for a hooker which is a concern. Doesn't tackle like a forward either eg missing that one on Folau for his 1st try. Ennis should get a go in QLD.
10. Weyman-I thought he a good game, not brilliant but very solid and doesn't make any errors. Bellamy made a big mistake by benching him too long between 14-50 minutes mark.
11. O'Donnell-One of our best forwards, tried hard but didn't have much help
12. Creagh-Hands let him down badly with a few dropped balls(Lockyer try wasn't his fault) and didn't hit the line with much gusto, back to the bench for game 3.
13.Gallen-Passenger for the whole game, no impact and shouldn't have been picked.
14. Poore-Ok impact but hands also let him down, below best.
15. Stewart-Good impact in defence and ran the ball well. Handling errors also hurt his game.
16. Watmough-2nd best forward behind O'Donnell. Hit hard in defence and hit the line hard in attack, must start last game.
17. Morris-Should have been on at half time. Couldn't make any impact with limited minutes. Has to be picked in starting 13 for game3.

  1. Did Hodges get dropped after his debut ?? I can't remember if he did but I doubt he would have. Queensland stand by their players and are more likely to give them another chance if it was a one off game. Williams should not be dropped. Yes, he played shithouse but he wasn't the only one. At least he scored a try and had a better second half. There are no other wingers in NSW atm who are worth bringing in. I doubt he will play that bad again in his career.

I think Farrah and Gallen should not have played. Farrah was clearly not over his rib injury and did not test the QLD defence at all. Gallen can't even use his right shoulder. They both gave QLD a try each also with ridiculous passes. I don't know why they played at all. They let their team mates down I feel.

Watmough was brilliant and O'Donnell was excellent, with his only blemish the last try which was a gift to Smith. I thought Creagh struggled and Stewart was average also.

If it wasn't for Hayne then we would have lost by 40 at least. He was awesome. Has to be the fullback for the last origin.

Wallace looks like getting the hook. NSW has to look at next years origin now and blood some more rookies or at least pick Mullen at half.

  2. I think Brett Morris could get a run for Wolfman on the wing. Hodges wouldnt get dropped becuase he is a super star, I dont think Williams has that luxury. From memory he had an awful test match for Australia in the world cup I think so maybe he doesnt handle the next step up George?

  3. If you want a laugh, watch the replay of the first 20 minutes on mute, with the Benny Hill soundtrack playing on repeat. What a circus!

I feel you have been WAAAY too lenient on some of the poorest performances I have seen on any footy field anywhere PAWD, let alone on the game's biggest stage.

I have never seen a more uninspiring human let along captain as Kurt Gidley. Yes he tries hard, but he made Jamie Soward's attempted tackle on Inglis earlier in the year look awesome, and he was the first one to miss Folau before Farah's abysmal effort to let in the second try.

I have been saying for 12 months now that Wallace has to go, and surely now the idiotic selectors have woken up to the fact that he just isnt that great a footballer. He was passing 10 metres backwards, 5 metres forwards, and hitting his own players in the head with some garbage distribution in what was billed as his make or break game. I sincerely hope we never see him in Blues colours again.

Beard Man came good in the second half when he wasnt running into 'The Bermuda Triangle' although his 1st tackle kick late in the game deserves a good kick up the arse.

I despise Ennis, but he needs to be in there for the same reasons B Elias was for so many years. Provides the niggle and more heart than Farah ever will.

I could go on forever. I thought Watmough was brilliant and needs to start the next game, and we desperately need his rape brother to be back in time for next year to play fullback for us in 2010. Bring back Jennings for Lyon the myth, Mullen in for Putrid Wallace, stick with Campo and mould him into an Origin player in the dead rubber, and PLEASE dispose of Brent Kite For FUCK SAKE!!

As for Bellamy, he has finally been found out once and for all. He looks like a School Principal lecturing schoolkids, not an inspiring coach like just about every QLD coach has been in origin history, or maybe Gould from our side over the years.

Time for a massive clean out of the deadwood and for the selectors (who also need to go) to do as they said they were going to all along, stick with the youth policy, but pick the talented youth, not the over rated youth.

  4. The first thing NSW needs to do is to select some new selectors. Why did we pick players who were injured? If you can't train on the Friday you don't play. Did NSW train as a team at all?
We need to start picking blokes who want to play for NSW, not your Jamie Lyon/Brett Kite/the rapists brother types who go missing when the going gets tough.

Gidley needs to move to the bench, Farah cost us 12 points so needs to go. Take out Watmough and Hayne and we lose by 30.

There's going to be no ink left on the "NEVER TYO PLAY ORIGIN AGAIN" stamp at NSWRL headquarters this morning.

  5. I agree with most of your assessments PAWD. In particular Kite must never wear the sky blue again.

Really though, we are just re-arranging deckchairs on the Titanic. The only three "old" players in the Qld team are Lockyer Price and Petero. I dont think they'll miss Lockyer much when he's gone, and if they find a couple of front rowers to step up when the oldies retire, the Blues might not win for 5 or 6 years- look at the players Qld have- they're just better than anything we have to offer.

George, Wolfman is overrated. Typical example of a guy who gets more press than he deserves because of his mouth or in this case, the way he looks. Morris is a better player.

I hate to say it though, but they need to keep picking that other Manly retard Watmough.

Mullen HAS TO BE PICKED. He is a better player than Wallace. Wallace benefits at club level by playing in such a quality team. Drop him in at 6 or 7 for the Knights and you wouldn't hear from him. Put Mullen at 7 for Bris and he'd win the Dally M. Pick Mullen, let hm play the next two series regardless of performance because he is young, the best half in NSW and could be Origin 7 for ten years. Wallace is just not as good.

Farah should be back if healthy, he's the best hooker in NSW by far. But you can't have guys half-healthy playign Origin.

Gidley is a utility, if he's your captain at Origin level that shows you're in trouble.

  6. Also, Ross is right about Bellamy. Easy to coach when you have the best players. No coach is a genius. Mal was an utter failure as a club coach and now looks like a genius. Why? He has the best players.

Coaches can affect the club's culture like Bennett at the Dragons, instill discipline and hold players accountable, but if they can't play, you can't win and no coach can change that.

  7. PAWD, Hodges wasn't a superstar when he made his origin debut. He made a name for himself over the following 2 years. Don't forget they way he was playing and acting whilst at the Roosters. Wolfman has only been playing in the NRL for 12 months and he will develop as a superstar as long as NSW stick with him, just as QLD stuck with Hodges. We achieve nothing by giving him one crack and saying thats it good bye.

Deevs, I don't think Wolfman is over rated. For the last 12 months he has been reliable, safe and got the job done. I don't see how you can say he is over rated. I do agree that he was terrible last night but he had not let anyone down till that game.

In the end he is only a winger and NSW have more concerns then just the Wolfman. They have to sort the 1,6,7 and 9 and keep them in place for the next couple of years.

Also the only thing good about this origin series is that is likely to be Bellamy's last one as coach. As I have posted before he is highly over rated and this is a good example of why he is not good enough. See ya later Bellyache and take the selectors with you.

  8. 1 gidley - would he be playing 1 if stewart was fit
2 williams - would he be playing if he did not have that beard and was on the end a fantastic manly team for the month of last years finals
3 lyon - see first comment (pawd)
4 monaghan - again see 1st (pawd) should be on the wing
    5 hayne - as above
6 barret - thought he was very good threw quite a lot of good balls to get nsw in space
7 wallace as above with everyone else's comments, is a good defender and is tough but just not good enough for origin
8 kite - hard to comment did not realise he played
9 farah - was disgraceful took disgusting options with some kicks - not only were they poor kicks they were also poor options and also failed with his primary role on the field with some passes from dummy half that an u10's team would be embarrased about, poor defensively (think it is pretty clear i was not happy with farah)
10 weyman - was ok deserves to be back
11 odonnell - plays well with the ball and when attacker is right but does not do the little things - it was him in the first game who did not chase hard on a kick and watched them score-
he also made no effort to catch what was a poor pass from gallen but let folau catch and run 80 to set up 1st try. there was another example but cant remember
12 creagh - played well but probably not quite up to origin either has always had problems with hands under pressure - there is noone better and should be there
13 gallen - through the bad pass to gift field position for 1st try and i thought he was the lazy defeneder to allow inglis to get to gidley untouched and considering he threw pass expect more urgency barely noticed the supposed tough guy throughout the game best get back in gym ad do some more arm curls grub
14 poore - still not sold on poore dropped the ball often and doubt parra fans that excited to get him
15 watmough - best forward on the field - both teams
16 stewart - useless could not catch
    17 morris - see 1st comment

after bagging all them nsw should have won that game all 4 of their tries were scored from mistakes
    1st gallen
2nd williams drop then farah/poore gidley poor attempt on folau
    3rd pass from farah
4th odonnell dropped trying to keep ball out of in goal
we were only gifted one try the hayne intercept although did not thin haynes 2nd should have been given as refs are not allowed to judge whether he would have made the tackle just whether or not he was denied an opportunity

last point finally - i think it shows that all selectors have no idea when they continually come up with amazing decisions for man of the match - thaiday really did not notice him

  9. do any of you locals know if players from a decent team will be back for game 3 ie jennings and lewis

also was a bit harsh on williams he has been playing good footy but that kick with less than ten to go on 1st tackle down by 4 against a team that is struggling with a few injuries and fatigue was one of the worse options in recent memory

they should have picked cooper and had monaghan on wing

  10. My Origin Team for Game 3, keeping next year in mind. A lot of youth, a bit of size and some talent and creativity:

    1. Gidley unfortunately. He is the Captain and has to go down with his sinking ship this year. To be replaced by The Rapist when back to fitness next year. Gidley to bench next year
    2. Hayne
    3. Jennings
    4. J. Morris
    5. Chris Lawrence, B.Morris or Wolfman
    6. Campo (He has got talent, and drew the short straw with Wallace missing last night's game)
    7. Mullen
    8. Leyroyd Lahrs (Canberra)
    9. Ennis
    10. Chris Houston (Newcastle)
    11. Watmough
    12. O'Donnell
    13. Lewis
    14. Wing (Gidley next year)
    15. Ben Creagh
    16. Josh Perry
    17. Tupou
Not certain where a Captain is coming from for next year or a coach for that matter. Maybe bring back Gus?? Or someone that isnt coaching an NRL Team full time like Mal...

  11. Frank - I watched Jennings train at very close to 100% at CUA stadium the day of the origin. Carl Jennings put through a handful of 1st graders through an intense cardio session and Jennings got through it and seemed to pull up well. If he was giving the same leniency as Wing was given (till Monday to prove his fitness) he would have been right to play in the origin. I can't imagine he was happy watching the game on TV.

  12. George, I agree that Wolfman is solid and a very good first grade winger. However, he isn't origin class- as evidenced by lasts night performance, his ball skills are terribly limited.

If he didn't have the beard and nickname, he'd get a lot less press and may not even have an origin or test jersey. He has been all over the papers lately because of the pink beard. I think getting more attention than your ability dictates defines overrated. How often do you see Morris in the paper?

I dont have a problem with that, as press eventually equals money (see also, A.Mundine) and these guys have limited time to make money, and for most of them, limited career options after sport. Williams will probably get more in his next contract than guys like Morris, and I'd pay Morris over Williams any day. Good luck to him. But when overrated players get rep jerseys, then I think it is a problem.

  13. Ross, if you ever bring up Gould in a positive manner again and suggest he gains even more employment, I will find you and put a glassing on you that even Greg Bird would describe as over the top.

I shit you not, I got so annoyed by that fuckwit last night that I watched the second half with the tele on mute. I have NEVER heard more know-it-all cliche-ridden bullshit in my life.

He thinks he put the air in the football, and yes he probably has the best record of any NSW Origin coach ever. But as we discussed before- it helps to have the players and he always had Fittler and/or Johns at their peak (two best Blues Origin players ever), Daley, Lazzo et al playing for him. Let's not forget that.

  14. Good point about Houston Rossco. He is a very good player and needs to take Kites spot ASAP. Danny Wicks would also add spark, mungrel and that Fat bastard that we all want to see. Put both Morris twins in and give them a go. They are both in form, Brett had been outstanding in a very flat Saints backline and he can pass and hold the ball, unlike the over rated Wolfman.

  15. Point taken Deevs. Desperate times sometimes call for desperate measures.

I am willing and hoping for better coaching options to come along don't get me wrong. If it HAD to come down to Gould or Bellamy though, unfortunately for us all, I would choose Gould.

Fuck what am I saying!! Times are BAD

  16. I think its very easy to over analyse things here. Simply QLD have a better core group of 30 players, better than us. And when you are already preparing for a game which you are long odds to win the last thing you need to have is a preperation in which so many players were injured or under injury clouds. All of the following were under clouds: Lyon, Barrett, Gallen, Farah. Put that on top of the fact we already had: Wing, Jennings ruled out it was a terrible preperation. I am a massive blues fan. However I have never had as big of a bet as I did on Wednesday night a QLD/QLD half full double at $2.50.

I dont think the responsibility can be soley dumped on Bellamy even though I dont think he should get the job next year, he simply doesnt have the playing group and he also has 3 selectors sticking their noses in team selections. I dont know how in this day and age we have a 3 man selection panel who are not actively coaching in any capacity. It is ridiculous, yet they pick the NSW team for the toughest arena in Rugby League.

Well Done QLD, hope the Blues can fix things up totally. Id love to see Gould come back and coach the side, however he is alot smarter than that. NSWRL is fucked. Let the coach pick the team and he then lives and dies by the sword. You cannot tell me Meninga didnt get the side he wanted, even though the QLD team picks itself.

    Frustrating!!!

  17. Wolfman doesnt have the core skills of a winger because he was never a Winger until he broke into first grade. Having played against him going through the grades he was always a backrower and seen as a hard working backrower not a player with immense skill. This was evident, QLD repeatidly kicked into the left corner so he had to bring the ball back with his right arm exposed, his carry for a first grade footballer is terrible. To be holding the ball in two hands and make it the first point of contact in any tackle is suicide!
