When I heard about the latest disgraceful behaviour involving league players it didnt surprise me 1 bit. The all in brawl between Blacktown City and Lower Mountains on the weekend was just another nail in the coffin for rugby league this year. It was also another case of "coconuts" losing their very small minds.
After conceding the game with a late try the Blacktown thugs knew they couldn't win so they started bashing anyone with a blue jersey on. If you have seen the footage these under 17 Blacktown kids are clearly a lot bigger than their opponents and took full advantage of the size advantage by punching, kicking and kneeing all and sundry. For the guy who got 20 years I say "its not enough"!!!!!! This grub of society should be locked up for his dog act behaviour or fuck off back up your tree overseas. This shit has been going on since I was playing for Lower Blue back over 10 years ago. Win lose or draw these monkeys just want to fight, bite and show that they are bigger and stronger than the poor little white boys. No doubt the grub who got 20 will end up playing rugby or go by another name and play league in another comp.
The NRL has to answer to this aswell after the state of Origin fiasco where everyone was throwing punches and stiff arms. What a great example to set, and this was by the best players we have in the game.
I have talked about this before over a few beers and the solution is;
1. Weight restrictions. You are weighed before the season and play in a weight category to suit you size. Mandatory weigh ins every week before play aswell.
2. Coconut only comp. All islanders play in their own comp where they can bash the shit out of each other week in week out.

Reminds me of a GF I played at the very same ground for Lower Blue Under 16s against St Pats 15 year ago. Came very close to erupting into a similar fiasco.
ReplyDeleteThis shit has been brewing in the Penriff JRL for years now. The biggest culprits are the parents. I dont know how refs and players put up with such sub-primate behaviour from not the kids, but the fucking parents!! Its absolutely unbelievable. You need to see it to believe it.
I love league to bits, but there's no way my son is playing in the future, particularly in the Riff JRL if this shite is not cleaned up immediately. Well done D Feltis and co for rubbing this grub out for 20 years. Also congrats to Australian Rugby and AFL for already banning him from their game for the same time frame. As PAWD notes though, watch out for the changing of the birth certificate.
Can someone get Phillip Ruddock back in office PLEASE!!
Totally agree the fight was a poor image for Rugby League. The bans are a good step in the right direction to begin to send a clear and consistent message to the small minority of teams and clubs in the PJL that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated. However it is again another example of the Media only reporting the negative aspects of the game. I currently coach an Under 11-1's team at the Brothers Club. Our team alone had raised $1000 to donate to The Childrens Hospital at Westmead, this is player driven last year we raised $750. I have 4 Islander players in my team who I have no issue with and are among the most mature and best behaved.
ReplyDeleteNow PAWD I agree totally and this should be the main point in this whole discussion. Parents model behaviour for their children, if the parent is aggressive and has a temper more often than not there is a clear correlation in the behaviour of their child. Parents really need to pull their heads in and start to put into perspective their son and in some case daughters future in the game. Less than 1% of players will play in the NRL.
How can we make parents change their behaviour? The current behaviour is based totally in my opinion on the competitive nature of parents and alot of them living their lives through their childrens eyes.
There should be no finals or grand finals before the age of 13. Im willing to debate what age we can clearly state that players are developed and mature enough to play competitively and not be influenced by their parents. The new structure would be based around divisions on ability like we have now, 10 team divisions everyone plays eachother twice which will give every team 18 games per season, the junior league should look at limiting the number of players over a certain weight to 2 maybe 3. The problem isnt the islanders it is that coaches stack their sides full of huge islanders and they win competitions purely because they are bigger and more powerfull than the other teams. That isnt junior development that is trophy coaching, again that isnt the kids or the islanders fault, it is a problem with coaches and parents who are way to competitive and just want to win and dont care how they achieve this.
I totally disagree with an Islander only competition it is racism and isnt the way to deal with this issue. My two biggest players in my Under 11-1's are white they are both fairly big but why punish them for their natural weight and size? I also find the smallest players are often the players who tackle the big islanders and hurt them with good tackle technique. We play against Islanders who are slightly bigger and other white players who are also bigger. I dont see it as a race issue. I just think kids are getting bigger for whatever reason.
ReplyDeletePure weight divisions will not work it was punted for a reason, it is a 1960's mentality. However as I have listed above it may be beneficial to limit the ammount of bigger players to 2 or 3 so they are spread throughout the teams. As stated earlier the problem is when you have teams with 4 or 5 huge kids playing against teams with no bigger players this needs to be stopped.
As far as your son playing League PAWD I agree with your concerns and if I had a son he would be playing soccer until the age of 10 or 11. After that age I would then put him into league. I have coached alot of players who have played from 6's / 7's on and were superstars via their speed, size and now they are in the 11's or 12's they are being taken over by players who are not scarred from being bashed in these junior years.
I also think soccer has alot of skill benefits which carry over to league. And soccer has implemented competitions where there is no finals and scores are not even taken.
I could talk all day on this issue. The Penrith Junior League needs to change their competition structures to best accomodate the influx of islanders into Rugby League to ensure big, small, fat, skinny, tall, short players can all co-exist because Rugby League will flourish if we can create environments where all players can enjoy the game and develop their skills. This is not happening at the moment.
Documentation in regards to birth certificates, records and proof of age need to be tightened massively. I played in Junior Rep teams through 13's, 14's, 15's, 16's who admitted they were not the correct age and in some cases were up to 4 years older than me but didnt have birth certificates and the Junior League and St Marys inparticular just dodgy it and pass them through because they want to win competitions and have good players at their club. This mentality will be taken away if there are no finals, grand finals awarded in junior development years.
Good points Boxhead. The suggestion of a coconut only comp was only a joke so don't take me seriously. I was just so angry at the footage of those tiny Lower mountains kids getting whacked by bigger islanders for no apparent reason. Lucky I am not in radio or on tele as I would have lost my job for being racist.
ReplyDeleteYeah PAWD I had a laugh at your post. However people have been suggesting segregating them into their own competition which isnt going to deal with the problem, we need to accomodate them by changing our structures.
ReplyDeleteThere should be licences for having kids. There are plenty of kids who have no hope because their parents are spades and thats pretty much what it comes down to. I couldnt believe that fight but strong action has been taken and lets hope that we never see anything like that again.
You won't need to worry about creating an all islander comp- its already underway. they call it the toyota cup. in 10 years it will be known as the NRL.
ReplyDeleteLook at the trends- how many islanders were in the comp 15 or even 10 years ago? how many white kids are taking up league? you want to know why AFL is making inroads and will make them even quicker after these sorts of incidents? because middle class white people no longer have any interest in seeing their kids being bashed by fobs every saturday.
EXACTLY!! Anyone who thinks otherwise is completely oblivious to the current facts and trends unfortunately
