My life collapsed this morning having to watch a meaningless World Cup qualifier between Ireland and Montenegro on ESPN. This after yet another borning international last night between the Socceroos and the footballing superpower that is Oman!
We need to extend the league season to 30 rounds so its fair that each team plays each other twice on a home and away basis like just about every other sport on the planet. Fuck off the meaningless February/March trials and whack these games on as the extra 4 rounds required.
Roscoe I couldnt agree more. It needs to go one of two ways. 1) We extend the season to 30 rounds which would be great for us League lovers. 2) Reduce the season to 16 Rounds. Every team plays eachother once with one bye each, we have a 4 week preseason tournament, allstar weekend (nrl all star game, city country, under 20's all stars, pacific islands, aboriginals ect ect), stand alone Origin series and Test matches. This would then make the season around 26 rounds plus finals like we have now.
However Maybe Roscoe we could extend the season to 30 rounds with 2 bye weekends, have a 4 week finals series, preseason tournament. Only 6 weeks off maximum!!!
Brilliant! Work the bludgers into the ground I say. The rest of us have to work 48 weeks a year on a pittance of their wage, so toughen the fuck up fellas and stop whinging about your 'hectic' schedule. Heck, a busy workplace may just keep you from harrassing women and shitting in hotel hallways!!
Watch the NFL!!!!! Plus, NBA starts in two weeks. I agree though, Aussie sports scene is bleak- I saw the A League lead off a sports update the other day for fuck sake. Cricket this year will be average too with the WOEFUL Windies touring........
it has gotten that lean in the sports news department that there was a full page story in one of the sunday papers on some aust female tennis player ( assume sam stosur) making the final of some 2nd rate tournament (again think it was the japan open) - two weeks ago it would not have got a mention or placed in the bottom corner near where all the saturday scores are
I would have agreed with you this time last week Roscoe. However, I travelled down to Phillip Island on the weekend to the Australian Moto GP and it was an awsome 4 days.
You need to be there and see how fast the bikes are and how crazy the dudes riding them are. 360kmph is unreal live and the noise is awsome.
There were stacks, crashes, overtaking.
I totally agree with you in regards to the cars ie: V8's and Formula 1, it is boring and they do go around and around and around. But the bikes are sensational and it is only the Moto GP not the Superbikes, these guys are in a class of their own.
I'll take your word for it Boxhead. I must admit I did watch the last few laps on Sunday, and yes they are a lot more interesting than cars as they actually pass each other, and quite often which is good.
The most irritating thing I find about the cars, and especially bathurst is the use of the safety car. Like everything else in society, public liability has gone to ridiculous levels, where this 'safety' car comes out at the drop of a hat. It needs to be revised.
I agree with all of your comments. In the 125cc race on the weekend there was a really bad fall from a rider and the safety flag was bought out and riders then go back to the pits until the track is clear.
While the riders are in the pits the safety car clears the course and depending on how many laps are remaining the race may or may not be restarted. On the weekend with 6 laps to go the race was not restarted and the order when the safety car was initiated was the final standings for the race.
This is a totally different approach to the V8's as you stated. Alot of discussion between me and my Dad who is a longtime Moto GP fan on exactly what you are calling for to be revised. My Dad suggested and I thought it was an excellent point similar to what I think you are getting at Roscoe. Why should a rider who has a 1,2,3,4,5 second lead over the place behind them forfiet that lead due to a fall elsewhere or a crash in the V8's case? Dad suggested that it should then be restarted in place order from when the crash occured. And each rider starts and the next rider cannot start until the lead the other rider had over them previously has expired. So obviously the rider/driver in 1st would take off and the 2nd rider could not go until the lead between the 2 had expired and go through the order as such, just via the flashing lights they use to start every race but obviously it would flash to indicate when each rider can resume.
I think it has alot merrit and is really the only fair way to restart races. But as you say the safety car does come out too much in the cars. In the 3 days at Phillip Island there was only 1 safety car and it was the result of a fall and oil on the track.
Moto GP is the only form of Motorsport I can cop. The rest is rubbish. I want to see overtaking, risks, crashes, speed and excitement. Not cars going around and around and around.
Thats exactly it Boxhead. I was watching Bathurst last weekend, on my couch, and wondering really why the hell these drivers go hammer and tong round the course, only for their leads to be brought back to zero, or as in the case of Skaife/Murphy, fall out of contention completely due to an unluckily timed pit stop whilst a car crashed bringing out the putrid safety car. With the implementation of Box's beforementioned solution/s to the safety car problems, Bathurst would then be a decent car race regardless of what your overall views are of car racing.
And Crackers, I will only ever go to Bathurst and Indy as I have done in the past, to get on the piss quite simply. The car races are a sideshow to what you see in the crowds at those absolute zoos. 'Tit Tennis' at Indy springs to mind naturally!
Yeah the only issue I have with my suggestion is how much time it will take to resume the race, however if the safety car isnt brought onto the track every second lap time wont be an issue.
I agree Roscoe, my Dad wanted to go and I just tagged along with him for 4 days on the booze, but once there and watching the race I really enjoyed myself and will be going down again next year forsure. Off the track there was alot of quality.
League Four Nations begins this weekend anyway guys, games are on fox on saturday and sunday mornings for the next 3 weeks replayed from 9am till 10:30pm and the 4th week will be the final. If not like Deevs stated previously watch the NFL it is my second fav sport by a long mile. Bring on Feb 13th when the NRL resumes with the Allstar game.
spent a couple of hours going through some of the old posts. maybe you people could use this downturn in sporting events to get out and play some sport. it read like some you play/played rugby, have you heard of cricket, heck maybe competitive walking is more your style, especially box86, is this your year of birth, you dropped a few names and talked yourself up a little about some rep games, are you still playing at some level, it sounds like you guys are from the west surely you could get a game with lethbridge park rugby league. got this link from a work colleague who was in some sport tipping comp enjoyed your topics keep it up harry
Hahahah 'You people' mate we are 40km away if your in the city you penis.
Yeah Harry I just spend my time sitting on here talking myself up. I played a bit of rep footy so what. I referred to who I played with and against not myself. If I was any good Id still be out there playing.
As far as playing locally I have a shoulder worth around $15,000 so Im not exactly jumping at the thought of playing any park sport, however if your going to travel 'out here' and have a run against 'us people' well Im sure a few of us could use you as a tackling bag.
Im still laughing at the thought of you going through old posts for a few hours. Are you a virgin by any chance? I couldnt think of anything worst than reading the dribble we talk on here. Get a life, or maybe its George coming back with a different alias? Conspiracy.
Named after the original booze fuelled atrocity, this is the blog for the sports fan sick of the drivel in the papers. We'll be putting out some different opinions that you won't read in the Tele because we actually like sports and don't take them too seriously, unlike most sports journos.

Yeah, anything to get more league, this year was great to watch and ended too soon.

ReplyDeleteIs motor 'sport' really a sport?? Surely it doesnt count. Thank Christ that's almost over for another year.
ReplyDeleteAs the great B Birmingham once quoted: "And these fucking cars have been going round and round, and it's been so FUCKING boring!!"

Hey Roscoe, weren't you driving up to Bathurst at midnight last weekend to watch the boring car races???
ReplyDeleteAgreed though, the safety car is a joke.
And Boxhead is right, watching any motor sport on TV is a poor second to watching it live.
Thats exactly it Boxhead.
