How must Andy Roddick feel right now. I saw the after match presentation and Roddick just looked gutted. He played the best game of his career and still couldnt beat his nemesis in an epic 4 1/2 hour match. I would put Roddick on suicide watch and put security around Federer because Roddick could lose his mind and shoot either person after the torment of another loss to the Fed Express.
Tennis might usually be quite boring but the mens tournament at wimbledon this year was quite exciting with some great tennis being played throughout. It was also very amusing to see another POM choke in the semis.
Great post PAWD. Gee I feel for Roddick, he's actually one of the few yanks I admire as a human being on this planet. Would not blame him if he snapped and/or went on a John Daly like drinking spree for the rest of his life.
ReplyDeleteThe only bloke from what I hear that could challenge Federer for Greatest ever is Rod Laver. Federer deep down knows this as well idolising him throughout his career. As far as I'm concerned, he definately shits all over the rest, Sampras including who in comparison to Federer was a boring as batshit tennis player as well as human being. He relied heavily on his serve (which is probably the best ever) which got him through most Wimbledon victories whereas Federer continues to pull shots out of his arse, particularly on the big points in big matches as demonstrated in each of his 15 GS victories and last night as well.
A true legend of Sport
Hard to compare eras but Federer is right there- probably fair to say that he is the best of modern times, although with the slight asterisk that apart from Nadal on clay, he hasn't really had competition as hard as some in other eras- Connors, McEnroe and Borg, then Lendl, all playing at the same time- how many would Connors have won if not for Borg and McEnroe? How many would Sampras had won if Aggasi wasn't there at the same time? I don't think Federer has had a comparable "nemesis". But he is no doubt up there. I agree about Roddick- I felt sorry for him until I remembered how rich he is and that he is married to a 21 year old SI swimsuit cover model.
ReplyDeletere Laver- apparently he was barred for 3 years of his prime due to the amateurism rules and would've won ten more slam titles- he was unbeatable at the time.
ReplyDeletefederer is the greatest ever - the depth in tennis now is better than it ever was - based purely on numbers, look how many countries are represented on the world scene. there were no russian players, not many players from south america not as many eastern european players. back then there was basically only the poms, yanks and us. just because federer is twice as good as the second best player(until rafa came along) or someone in the top ten does not necessarily make the top ten weaker today it just shows how good fed is.
ReplyDeleteas above for tiger
I follow Roddick religiously and have a $10 bet on him in each grand slam and I have to agree, Federer is the greatest tennis player ever. Most consistant I guess and he owes me about $300.
