Early kickoffs

There has been a bit of debate lately about possibly having earlier kickoffs for the Sunday afternoon NRL. David Gallop was throwing around the possibility of a Noon kickoff to which most clubs opposed. I personally would love the occasional early kickoff on both Saturday and Sunday. A few weeks ago I watched a game on the Gold Coast which kicked off at 2pm on Saturday. This was a great time slot and got me enthusiastic and ready for the rest of the games later that day. As I said, the occasional game would be good, not every week. It could possibly attract a different audience to attend games that would not normally go to a night or late arvo game. Thoughts????

  1. Early kickoffs don't work, we had them before and scrapped them. Its a case of always wanting what we dont have. Remember Super Saturday was 3pm game, 5:30pm game and 7:30pm game? Got scrapped. I totally agree that the occassional game is awsome, however I coach an Under 11's team on Saturdays and the game you are referring to on the Gold Coast I missed due to that committment I'm a Titans fan. The biggest issue regardless of what we think is that crowds do not come to these games and the tv ratings wont be as high as they would in a night timeslot. At this point in time when we are struggling for crowds it isnt going to happen especially when the majority of your market (Kids and adults involved in Rugby League) are at their own games on a Saturday afternoon. Personally I would like to see Sundays made up of 3 games: 1pm, 3pm and 5pm games all live on TV none of this delayed telecast rubbish we are fed. I love the daytime football, but thats not where the ratings are unfortunatley.

  2. Good point on the 3 games Sunday Boxhead. I'm happy to ditch one of the Friday night games for another game on Sunday or the occasional sat arvo. If we bring in new teams into the comp in the future, this should open up a spot for one the beforementioned timeslots to be taken up

  3. Regardless of my view I agree with PAWD in the fact that the current system isnt giving our game enough positive exposure. If we are to grow the game interstate and make it a truely national competition then the exposure needs to be better, because the product is excellent. I still cant believe we are not opposing the 5pm AFL game as it gives them a timeslot by themselves with no competition and I often find myself watching the Sunday evening game because the NRL coverage on channel 9 is full of ads and is delayed.

  4. While on the topic of dropping the Friday night game, I would love to see a stand alone game with the panel type coverage in which Fox applies on a Monday Night, Channel 9 Rugby League from 7pm till 11pm with a pregame show, the game, post game show and press conferences. If you watch the coverage of major US sports it leaves alot to be desired for the type of coverage we recieve.

  5. Good points Boxhead. I must admit to being a big fan of the Monday night post analysis etc as well. The first game on Fri night is pretty much left straight after fulltime to go to a rushed kick off in the second, which leaves the viewer feeling somewhat empty I reckon

  6. Yeah totally agree, and the fact the game is littered with ads by the time the game finishes I have had 6 beers and have fallen asleep, seems a bit of a waste. I just think with the coverage and the analysis it gets people talking about the game. Imagine the post game analysis after Friday nights Dogs V Dragons game. Im a Titans fan and I didnt want the coverage to leave that game, but as soon as the game ends and they give man of the match the coverage is over.
